Q: What is acupuncture?

A: Acupuncture is the ancient Chinese system of natural healing that is based upon the principal that physical dysfunction is the result of an imbalance of the body’s organic, energetic and natural activity. Acupuncturists use 365 main acupuncture points throughout the body and insert needles to stimulate energy that is blocked or congested. The aim of acupuncture is to activate a patient’s vital energy to allow the body to balance and heal itself.

Q: How common is acupuncture?

Acupuncture originated in China more than 2,000 years ago, making it one of the oldest and most commonly used medical procedures in the world. American practices of acupuncture incorporate medical traditions from China, Japan, Korea, and other countries. The acupuncture technique that has been most studied scientifically involves penetrating the skin with thin, solid, metallic needles that are manipulated by the hands or by electrical stimulation.

Q: Does acupuncture hurt?

A: Only fine needles are used in acupuncture, and when they are inserted there is little to no pain. Once inserted, the needles may cause numbness or a calming sensation.

Q: Is acupuncture safe?

A: Yes. Vital Points Therapy uses only sterile, disposable needles, and all staff Acupuncturists are certified by passing the Clean Needle Techniqes required by the NCCAOM.

Q: Is acupuncture covered by my medical insurance?

A: If acupuncture treatment is required due to an accident or injury, your medical insurance may cover the costs of your treatment. For information specific to your provider, please call your insurance company.

Q: What insurance do you accept and for what services?

A: We accept Blue Cross Blue Shield, Great West, Aetna, Humana, Medicare, and many of the major insurance carriers. Most insurance covers therapy services with a physician's referral, some cover Acupuncture under certain circumstances, but all insurance have limitations and regulations that must be met in order to have your services paid for. You need to check with your insurance carrier for your deductible, coverage, and limits. Regardless of insurance coverage, the fees for services provided are your responsibility. We will provide this service as a courtesy if you come in for a free consultation.

Q: Do I need an appointment?

A: We suggest that all clients set an appointment, however on occasion we do accept walk-ins.

Q: How can I determine if I need Acupuncture rather than Physical or Occupational Therapy?

A: Acupuncture is excellent for regulating the body for imbalances that creates problems such as colds, vertigo, hormone imbalance, insomnia, pain relief, hot flashes, infertility, and stress. Therapy is more appropriated if there is a structural problem such as anything that might cause tension, muscle spasms, postural changes, old injuries, sprains and strains, surgery etc...
