SERVICES / Cancer Complications / Lymphedema

Treatment options for women diagnosed with breast cancer vary per individual case. Procedures may include lumpectomy, lymph node removal, partial or full mastectomy with or without reconstruction. Cancer patients may also undergo radiation and chemotherapy as part of their treatment plan. Two possible complications of the above treatments are frozen shoulder and lymphedema.

A frozen shoulder is often painful and results in loss of functional use of the upper extremity. Lymphedema is persistent swelling in the arm and often the chest region which can limit function. Lymphedema is a lifelong problem which if addressed appropriately is very manageable. Both of these complications are well managed by specialized physical therapy. Treatment consists of an individualized combination of manual therapy, modalities, exercise and education. Compression bandages and/or garments are also recommended for individuals with lymphedema.

Surgery, Chemotherapy and radiations may also leave survivors weak, scarred and literally burned out. A gently program of Manual Therapy, Acupuncture and Nutrition can begin that road to recovery by addressing the need to speed healing, remove toxins, improve circulation, and restore balance.

Because you deserve a well-rounded program, Vital Points Therapy has Integrative Manual Therapists specializing in lymphedema and an oncology-based rehabilitation program for cancer treatment-related impairments.
