What Is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is recognized as one of the oldest methods of healing.  Massage therapy is often referred to as bodywork or somatic therapy, refers to the application of various techniques to the muscular and soft tissues of the body, which includes applying fixed or movable pressure, holding, vibration, rocking, friction, kneading and compression using hands, forearms, elbows or feet.  All of the techniques are used to benefit the musculoskeletal, circulatory-lymphatic, nervous, and other systems of the body.

Some of the better known forms of Asian bodywork are Shiatsu, TuiNa, Medical Qi Gong and Thai Massage.  These techniques incorporate the Oriental Medical system of meridians, balance of the elements, energies and emotions of the different organ systems.
